A Green Roof

When I think of green roofs I imagine quaint cottages or houses that might appear in a landscape from the Lord of the Rings. But more and more modern commercial buildings are taking advantage of them. At Penn State there are a number of new buildings with green roofs. I was looking at a green roof in full bloom that lives above classrooms in the new Forestry Building on campus. The plants thrive in the heat that comes from life in the open sun.

Projects like this one are part of ongoing research focused on development of sustainable buildings. And it looks nice too.

Must be a hell-of-a-good place to plant tomatoes...

You may call me a "Six foot Hobbit" or perhaps just a nature lover at heart, but I think that a community with more green roofs incorporated in it is an excellent idea. I think that Germany, as well as Penn State, is on to something pretty creative here

I walk by that building near almost every day and I had no idea that was even up there! What a wonderful idea!

Wonderful idea. Reminds me very much of a Norwegian bachelor farmer story on Prairie Home Companion several years ago about sod roofs.

pitchertaker: It may be too hot and too little water for tomatoes. Next time I talk to one of the researchers I will ask about it.

earl thomas: There are more buildings with green roofs. Not all are easy to view though but I am going to search them out.

hrw115: There are little secret gardens all over campus. Easy to miss though if you aren't looking for them.

Chuck: I'll have to run that story down.
