2010 THON

Saturday morning there were thousands of people in the Bryce Jordan Center for THON, the the largest student-run philanthropy in the world! I was trying to find four Ag Science student dancers. Like looking for a needle in a haystack.

After getting my credentials and getting down to the floor the search began.

After about 20 minutes I found Krystal Bealing who was dancing for Delta Theta Sigma. Krystal is an Environmental Resource Management student.

More time looking through the haystack. As morning became afternoon the crowd got bigger.

I found Alyson Frederick dancing for the Cross Country Club after searching for 30 minutes. Alyson is a student in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. She also appeared in the blog last fall.

Ad Shoots for Penn State AgScience Magazine

The first issue of the College's redesign of Penn State Agriculture magazine will soon be heading to the printer. Some of the last things to complete are a series of institutional ads. These new items will reflect the College community's involvement in one of our key areas of focus. Stacie Bird stood in for lighting tests as we prepared to create photos concieved by art director Jonathan Ziegler. The first setup was in the a little sitting area of the Chemistry Building.

Ottar Bjornstad, professor of entomology, biology, and statistics, met with us in the Life Sciences building for the second shoot. He'll appear in an ad reflecting his work and the college's ongoing commitment to research.

Sarah Peterson is a junior in the Immunology & Infectious Disease program and agreed to be the subject for the first shoot. Her story will appear as part of the campaign focused on teaching in the College.

I'm constantly reminded of the amazing people and work that make up the College of Ag Sciences.

Smiley Face

It's always nice to see a smiling face. This one was covering the sign in front of the University House not far from Old Main. While no longer the home of Penn State's president it does serve in part as office space for the staff of the Penn Stater magazine. I bet editor Tina Hay came out and created the smiley face to welcome visitors.

Even if she didn't it is worth a visit to the Penn Stater magazine blog.

Think Again

Fresh snow makes a perfect canvas and I could not resist inscribing Think AGain, the name for our College's marketing campaign. There is a lot more to the agricultural sciences than most people realize.

This picture was made on Sunday morning after the heavy snowfall on Saturday. I am looking out over the Old Main lawn towards town.

So Think AGain!

Cancer Lab

I made this picture in the Life Sciences Building while waiting for a student to arrive for a portrait session. Research on tumor progression is led by associate professor, Adam Glick. One of the graduate students working in the lab appears in the above picture -- PhD candidate in the Immunology and Infectious Disease program Andrew Gunderson. He is studying the immune mechanisms of skin cancer.

After I finished my assignment I stopped in Dr. Glick's office to thank him for temporary loan of his space for photography. As the new editor of Penn State AgScience Magazine I sensed a story here. Look for that in some future issue of the magazine.

Stylized Old Main

Walking across campus this morning, a pause to make a picture of Old Main. Later, sitting at home I process the image in the iPhone and post. I'm amazed at what this tiny device can do.
