2010 -- Cold and the iPhone Camera

I've continued to experiment with the iPhone camera with mixed results. I suppose it was appropriate that just as I felt ready to brand the camera worthless a friend seny me a link to an NPR story called iPhone Squared. The remarkable images produced by Texas photographer Matt Nager with his iPhone were a perfect example (to me) of embracing the strengths and weaknesses of the iPhone camera.

So I started creating my own grids -- short visual stories of places and events. The one above depicts the walk from the East Parking deck to my office with the temperature hovering around 7F. The grids are the perfect creative spark to start off a new year.

Everyone knows you can click on the picture to see a large version right?

I'll apologize for not posting more. No pictures from the Pennsylvania Farm Show this year because I am busy working to get the next issue of the magazine together. For those of you who don't already know I have been appointed the new editor of Penn State Agriculture magazine. We are undergoing the first redesign since it began 25 years ago and it will emerge as Penn State AgScience Magazine. Stay tuned for more details.

Great stuff, Steve. My personal problem with my iPhone is I tend to think of it as not a real camera. Which, of course, is wrong. It simply is what it is. It's fun and obviously the best camera when it's all you have available. Still, there's that nagging voice in my head that says "the file size is too small". "You won't be able to license the images." "Use a real camera."

But still, I use it.

Your new position and the new look sounds interesting. Congratulations!

Matt Nager has some other good stuff on his site. He has been on this Earth almost half as long as I and has seen more than double the globe as I. In 1983, the year he was born, my main concern was beer, women, and consuming the former (while missing out on the latter).

Chuck: I hear you. I have slowly begun thinking about the iPhone as a useful image making device. Almost a camera! As far as the file size issues I know that there are plenty of examples of low res stuff doing well in the commercial marketplace but those nagging voices....

Thanks for the kind words about my new position too!

dig: So many great photographers out there today and many of them half my age. I try to stay focused on what I can do today.

If I was as earnest at a young age things would be different I think...
